Explore the 9 WA Wine Regions

Western Australia (WA) is home to nine spectacular wine regions, many of which have been producing some of the finest wines in the world since 1829. Representing less than 5% of the country’s overall wine production, WA undeniably prides itself on quality with the beautiful state bringing in 30% of Australia’s overall award-winning medals.

Swan Valley

Located on the outskirts of Perth is Australia’s second oldest wine region, the Swan Valley. Most of the vineyards are family-owned and operated and produce some of the most stunning fortified wines in Australia.

Perth Hills

The Perth Hills region is a unique and valuable part of WA’s wine making heritage. Today there are 25 small wine producers and vineyards which are quickly gaining recognition for their high-quality award-winning wines.

Peel Region

The Peel region is nestled south of Perth between the southern end of the Perth Hills region and the northern start of the Geographe region. The Peel regions first commercial winery was established in 1974, predominantly, with Shiraz vines which today remain the dominant variety within this region.

Geographe Region

Just 2.5 hours from Perth lies the Geographe region which is located on the south west coast near Bunbury with the Indian Ocean forming its western boundary. The major planted grape varieties include Chardonnay, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Margaret River

Situated in the south west corner of Western Australia, the Margaret River region is one of Australia’s most famous and internationally regarded quality wine regions. At everyday drinking level the Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Cabernet Merlot blends are outstanding quality and value for money.

Blackwood Valley

The Blackwood Valley is nestled inland between the Margaret River and Geographe wine regions. The region’s first vineyards were established in 1976. It’s a beautifully scenic but relatively small size region and the home of 18 small wine producers.

Manjimup

Located 3.5 hours south – east of Perth lies the Manjimup region. The first vineyards were planted in 1987 and there are now 15 wine producers with the majority being family owned and operated.

Pemberton

The Pemberton region is located to the west of the township of Albany. The first vineyard was planted in 1977 and there are currently 17 wine producers scattered throughout this region. Pemberton is acknowledged as having a similar climate to Burgundy (France).

Great Southern

The Great Southern is the largest wine region in Western Australia, with its southern boundary bordering the Southern Ocean for 200 kilometres. Within this region are 5 distinct subregions – Frankland River, Mount Barker, Porongurup, Denmark, and Albany.
