The Great Southern is the largest wine region in Western Australia, with its southern boundary bordering the Southern Ocean for 200 kilometres. Within this region are 5 distinct subregions:

• Frankland River
• Mount Barker
• Porongurup
• Denmark
• Albany

Each subregion has its own topography and climate variation. The Mount Barker region was first planted in the mid 1960’s and this was the beginning of the modern era of West Australian winemaking that moved the industry away from its traditional home in the Swan Valley. East of Albany, two major ranges, the Stirling and Porongurup ranges. Specifically in the Porongurup’s some of the most stunning Riesling’s made in Australia. Frankland River produces very fine Riesling’s, outstanding Shiraz and more recently Grenache as does Mount Barker which produces high quality Cabernet Sauvignon from old vineyards. Denmark and Albany being closer to the ocean influence are acknowledged producers of quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The region’s climate is cool with high levels of rainfall and a long, slow ripening period allowing for the development of complex flavours and aromas in the grapes. These conditions have made the Great Southern region known for its cool-climate grape varieties, including Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir.
