The Pemberton region is located to the west of the township of Albany and its long southern boundary is about 40 kilometres inland from the Southern Ocean on Western Australia’s southern coast. Historically this region was best known for its production of timber from the vast expanses of native forests. There is rich deep karri, red loam soils in the lower lying areas and rich gravels on the hilltops. Pemberton is acknowledged as having a similar climate to Burgundy (France). The first vineyard was planted in 1977 and there are currently 17 wine producers scattered throughout this region and these favour the two Burgundian varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These varieties produce high quality table wines as well as excellent sparkling wines. Being a relatively cool region, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc are well suited to selected sites.

The majority of wineries in the Pemberton region are owned and operated by families. These families are dedicated to sustainability, with many of the wineries practicing organic and bio-dynamic farming methods in keeping with maintaining a pristine clean environment for grape growing and winemaking.
