The Blackwood Valley is nestled inland between the Margaret River and Geographe wine regions. Through this region flows the Blackwood River, Western Australia’s longest river. The region’s first vineyards were established in 1976. It’s a beautifully scenic but relatively small size region and the home of 18 small wine producers. Here the vineyards produce small batches of carefully crafted wines that are reflective of the region’s historical agricultural background and unique terroir. The majority of wineries in the Blackwood Valley are family owned and operated and committed to producing high quality wines expressive of their region.
The Blackwood Valley has a more continental climate as it lies inland and away from the influence of the Indian ocean. There are cool, wet winters and long warm dry summers. The rolling hills throughout the region contain well drained gravelly loam soils that are ideal for growing Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. This region is increasingly growing its reputation for producing quality wines.
