Situated in the south west corner of Western Australia, the Margaret River region is one of Australia’s most famous and internationally regarded quality wine regions. This region, once a dairy farming area had its first commercial vineyard established in 1967. This region stretches from the coastal town of Busselton in the north to Augusta on the southern tip. The township of Margaret River is about half way between these 2 towns. The entire western border of this region is the Indian Ocean, and the southern border is the Southern Ocean. There are 6ooo hectares under vines and more than 200 wineries producing extraordinarily great world class wines, in particular Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. More recently there has been significant investment in the production of high-quality bottle fermented sparkling wines. Particularly Blanc de Blanc styles made from Chardonnay. Cabernet Sauvignon is the star of red varieties, and it produces wines that clearly rival the great red wines of Bordeaux (France) and of other new and old world wine regions that produce Cabernets. Similarly, the Chardonnay’s produced in this region match the apex quality of the great Chardonnays of Burgundy (France) and the Napa Valley (US).
At everyday drinking level the Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Cabernet Merlot blends are outstanding quality and value for money.
The coastal location, true maritime climate and influence of the two oceans that surround the Margaret River region delivers the perfect conditions for growing high quality Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz. The soils are predominantly composed of well drained gravelly loams. In just 50 years the Margaret River region has developed a national and international reputation for its wines. Even though this region produces less than 3% of Australia’s grapes it produces about 20% of Australia’s premium wines and achieves about 30% of all the wine awards in Australian wine shows. Similarly the region achieves well above its share of global wine awards in international wine shows. Truly extraordinary.
